Greetings from the 2025 Festival Committee

Sherry Graham

MESSAGE FROM SHERRY GRAHAM

Chairperson of the St. Thomas Music Festival Committee

The Music Festival Committee has fully transitioned from the support of the St. Thomas Rotary Club, and we are looking forward to the year ahead. The festival is now solely run by the St. Thomas Christian Church and our committee members. We serve as a committee within the church, performing outreach work in the community. I am looking forward to my second year as Chairperson of the St. Thomas Music Festival. Last year, we celebrated both the 70th anniversary of this festival in St. Thomas and the long-time support of the St. Thomas Rotary Club. We are confident that our festival will transition through the ever-changing music world and continue to offer the opportunity for competition and performance to musicians young and old.

The participation of schools has been a welcome and celebrated part of the music festival for many years. Sadly, the reality of the cost of bus transportation for the students is proving to be a barrier for many and can be the deciding factor when registration time comes around. To mitigate this, we are working diligently to ensure that music teachers who want to put their school choirs, bands and groups in our competition know that there will be bursaries and awards that they will receive to cover most of their costs. The Exley Performance Bursary for school bands is given to each participating band to help cover bussing costs. Further, in support of bringing choral speaking back to the festival and ensuring its continued success, Sue Green, a retired teacher, has made funding available to assist with expenses to those wishing to participate in this discipline. We are grateful for the added financial support from these two sources.

Our festival is very fortunate to enjoy the support of the many community individuals, families and service clubs who furnish it with scholarships or donations. Students who have performed in two different classes and have received a mark of 85 or higher in one, will be considered for a scholarship. Regarding selection for the provincial competitions, adjudicators make recommendations for which students can perform in the OMFA provincials. The “Friends of the Festival” donations assist with the administrative costs of running the festival.

We are thankful for the dedicated volunteer committee members who have taken on specific duties to keep the festival operating smoothly and efficiently and for the additional volunteers who assist at the venues the week of the festival. We are grateful to the churches that generously offer their facilities for use as venues. Along with sound systems and beautiful pianos, the performers benefit from the carefully prepared gathering rooms and great performance spaces.

At the conclusion of the festival week, there will be a competition for the major awards. These awards will be presented at the Keynotes Concert. We are encouraging students to use the major awards and scholarships they receive for lessons or further musical competitions. Financial aid will be made available through the Elgin-St. Thomas Community Foundation Grant (formerly Doris Evans Music Student Fund) for assistance with lessons, accompanists, or registration fees for the St. Thomas Music Festival.

We encourage you to support the students by attending their live performances during the week of the festival and, a month later, at the Keynotes Concert. A free will offering will be gratefully accepted at those events. If interested in volunteering during this week to make our festival even more successful, please contact a member of the committee.

Please mark on your calendar February 24 – 28th, 2025 for the Festival competitions. Evening of Competition, Friday February 28, 2025 7 p.m. and Keynotes Concert March 28, 2025 at 7 p.m.

Adjudicators Scoring System

Please read carefully the rules for our system for issuing performance scores. For added clarification we include this explanation of how marks are presented and how certificates will be completed. Adjudicator results: On the Adjudicator’s Report page the adjudicator will write a specific percentage mark for each performance. The adjudicator will take into account:

  1. The choice of music in respect to content and format
  2. The quality of the music itself and its performance value
  3. The appropriateness of the music to the performer’s skill level, ability, and stage of development
  4. The time limit for each performance is respected (where applicable)

The adjudicator results will indicate the following evaluations on the certificates to be presented by the adjudicators:

  1. For results between 90% and 100% the seal will be GOLD
  2. For results between 80% and 89%the seal will be SILVER
  3. For results between70% and 79% the seal will be BRONZE

Scholarships

It is intended that scholarships be used to further musical studies. Some scholarships are funded by investments in past years; others are financed by annual donors. The decisions of the Scholarships Committee will be based upon the recommendations of the adjudicators and the funds available. The Scholarships Committee may also give consideration to students who have participated in more than one section or more than one class even if their highest mark is Silver. All award decisions are from the recommendation of the adjudicators to the scholarship committee.

  3. A participant may be disqualified if he/she is not ready to compete within 10 minutes of being called. A class will not be delayed to accommodate latecomers, but the adjudicator's secretary may change the order of performance in a class to accommodate those who have been competing at other locations.
  4. A chord may be given on the piano at the beginning of each piece of unaccompanied music.
  5. The Festival Committee reserves the right to appoint additional or substitute adjudicators.
